Ludacy, 2013

February 21-24, 2013
Bento Miso
Exhibition

This exhibition investigates what happens when game makers are thrown into the world of new media art? It may sound foolish, but the idea is based on the generosity seen in game development incubators such as Digital Ludology or Dames Making Games Toronto – where first time game developers are given the tools and knowledge to develop their first games. Encouraging indie game devs to expand their practice into an off-screen installation experience will hopefully spark an interest in new media art. Consequently, these installations may provide insight on how other new media artists can create works that can motivate interaction and play at the intersection of games and art.

Working alongside Cindy Poremba, Team Vector curator Christine Kim  invited three Toronto indie game makers, Damian Sommer, Alex Martin (Droqen) and Cale Bradbury (Net Grind) to create original new media art installations. Each individual installation takes unique perspectives of the game developers and their knowledge on game design – based on mainly in-screen game experiences – into the corporeal realm within an exhibition space. Though the results of this experiment are yet unknown, Ludacy will provide a space in which these artists can freely question, define and perhaps redefine the parameters of what makes a game. Consequently, this project will question what defines new media art and how does an installation of a game differ from an installation work of new media art.

These installations investigate games and art from their unique perspectives. They can choose what format will best investigate this intersection, whether it is sound, sculpture, large-scale projections, or anything else. This is ultimately up to the artist to decide. Making art is process which can be frustrating and fascinating but hopefully the outcome will result in a work that is not only playable but also contemplative and thought-provoking.
